Question: I have 128MB/256MB of memory installed in my computer, but why does my computer only show 112MB/224 MB of memory?
Answer: The system uses what’s called Shared Memory Architecture (SMA) This means that a portion of your physical memory is set aside to become the video memory. This is usually an adjustable setting in the Bios where you can set the video memory as 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, or 128MB depending on what your system allows and how much memory you have installed in your system.

Question: I put in my own bootable CD / Floppy but it does not seem to see the disc. What is going on?
Answer: Please make sure that the boot order within your Bios is set correctly to read off your optical drives / Floppy drive prior to reading from your hard drive. Typical boot order shows floppy -> optical drive -> Hard drive.

Question: I am using Memorex/Fuji/Sony/etc media and trying to make my own CD or DVD, but the system keeps not completing the burn. Is there something wrong with my burner/media?
Answer:

Please double check the media that you are using. There may be a slight chance that the media you are using is not supported. Please look at the following link http://www.btc.com.tw/english/3-2-1MediaSupport.htm which has the latest information on the media that is most common.
Please keep in mind that the codes displayed on the website refers to the manufacturer’s code. Most of the common US brands are all produced in Asia, and you will need to check the Manufacturer Code (MID) to see who made your discs. You will usually be able to find the MID printed as small black or silver lettering on the underside of your media, near the middle ring. The website displays the manufacturer’s code, which is much more precise in determining who created the media.

Question: When I play a DVD movie on my computer, the frames seem to skip or play erratically. How can I prevent this?
Answer:

Step 1: Cleaning the DVD movie
The main reason that movies skip is dirty or scratched DVDs. DVDs are much more susceptible to skipping and playback problems than CDs because the reading area is much smaller. Skipping is much more likely to happen with DVD movies that have been handled frequently, like those from a movie rental shop.
To fix playback problems, clean the DVD. Clean DVDs with filtered water and a lint-free cloth. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outer edge. If cleaning does not work, buy a CD/DVD repair kit available from local electronics stores that can clean discs and remove scratches.
If cleaning the DVD does not work and all DVDs play erratically, continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Logging off of the Internet while playing movies
Software can access the Internet or network while a movie plays. This can disrupt the movie at regular intervals. Make sure to disconnect from the Internet before playing a movie. If you are not connected to the Internet while playing movies and movies still skip, continue to Step 3.

Step 3: Changing the Desktop's color properties
Windows requires more memory and processing power to display large desktop sizes with lots of colors. Your eyes cannot easily tell the difference between colors beyond 16 bit. Use the following steps to make sure that the desktop is set at 16-bit color:

  1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop, but not on an icon, and select Properties.
  2. The Display Properties window appears. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Set Color or Color Quality to High Color (16 bit), or Medium (16 bit), if it is not already set.

Question: When I pop in my DVD movie, a region error occurs, why won’t my DVD play?
Answer:

NOTE: The following information applies to region one DVDs. Other region's laws and drive behaviors may be different.

Region errors occur when the DVD does not match the region (usually groups of countries) in which it was designed to be sold. The DVD drive is matched to the region it was sold in. If a DVD movie from a different region is placed in the drive, then a message will appear stating so and the DVD software may not let you play the movie. Most DVD players play three non-region titles before they quit playing non-region titles. This is designed to prevent illegal selling of software titles between regions. Purchase compatible DVD movies or replace the DVD drive with one from the same region as where the DVD movies are purchased.

Question: How do I ScanDisk and Defragment my hard drive
Answer:

The program Scandisk checks a hard drive for errors. The program Disk Defragmenter takes all of the scattered bits of program data and groups them together in more efficient areas of the drive.

Run ScanDisk before running the Defragmenter as follows:

Running ScanDisk in Windows 2000 and XP

  1. Click Start, then open My Computer.
  2. Right-click on the hard drive's icon (usually C:\).
  3. Click Properties, and then click the Tools tab.
  4. Click Check Now.
  5. Place check marks in all check boxes.
  6. Click OK, and then click Yes to schedule a full disk scan when the computer is restarted.
  7. Restart the computer. The disk scan can take a very long time to complete.
